The shearling jacket- a staple garment in flightwear over the course of two world wars -
has exploded onto the fashion scene, reinvented and reshaped by names including Helmut Lang, Burberry and Saint Laurent. The revered silhouette has seen numerous transformations: adornment of logos and crafting from entire colour wheels.
However, despite the modern day recycling of a garment as classic as the shearling jacket , century-old figurehead label Schott NYC champions the original rugged charm of the jacket.
Such pieces not only clothe celebrities such as Kanye West but also frequent the streets during fashion week and upon the vast confines of the runway.
This staple's perennial relevance within the industry and dust-free status within our wardrobes is owed to the interplay between versatility, practicality and style.

Despite the wealth of shearling pieces that have made themselves known to the industry the past year, two particular models are vivid within a cacophony of designs: The Arrivals' Moya iii and the Acne Studios Velocite.
And so, I introduce the icon that is the 'Velocite' shearling aviator.

Acne Studios, Velocite, $2,700
As a figurehead for fashion's infatuation with outerwear and nearly every fashion enthusiast's object of desire, the velocite has long cemented its place as one of the most sought after luxury jackets. The Stockholm based brand- founded in 1997- is famed for its ability to think outside the constraints of the industry-whether this is applicable from hats to sneakers. Acne focuses on, and succeeds at delivering 'minimalistic luxury', providing the quality and durability expected from its price tag.
Despite the 'velocite' still going strong since its introduction in 2012, one could say that Acne studios exposing a certain lack of abstract thought regarding outerwear design has paved the way for other sources of furious competition...

The Arrivals, Moya iii, $1,095
Cue, the moya iii. It is not only Acne Studios that is successfully impacting fashion's interpretation of outerwear. A newcomer in the industry- being founded in merely 2014- New York based brand 'The arrivals' has already created a stir, not only on social media but also remains on the radar of fashion's elite- clothing prominent figures such as Gigi Hadid and Kourtney Kardashian.
Yet, The arrivals' founding principles are not swayed by the current of celebrity exposure. Each piece- from 'The Moya iii' to the label's parkas are crafted with the principle: "designed for life out there" in mind, centring their designs on the idea of 'foreverwear'-raising and addressing the ever perrenial issue of 'sustainable fashion' . With water resistant shearling and an abundance of functional silver hardware detailing, The Arrivals' 'moya' succeeds in delivering the much needed interplay between style and practicality we expect from the shearling jacket.
