Set against the back drop of the Louvre pyramid, white neon lights form pillars edges out into winding tunnels situated upon midnight waters outside. Sterile white light, enclosed boxed space

and a mirrored view for the FROW, conjures memories of McQueen SS/01 Voss set, but in actuality sets the stage for Nicolas Ghesquière's futuristic vision.

Hosted at the Cour Carrée of the Louvre Museum, Ghesquière uses PFW womenswear collection to pay homage to retro space gear with imposing and advanced silhouettes; with showcased ensembles acting as a nod to his work at Balenciaga. Ghesquière confirms this motivation, stating: “I felt the need to dig into my obsessions,” during a preview at LV headquarters on the Rue du Pont-Neuf. Cocoon-bonnet headwear- Ghesquière’s space helmet creations- make an appearance in LV’s SS/19 collection, eerily reminiscent to the iconic headgear within The Handmaid’s Tale.

The collection explored the interplay and chemistry between the past and future, and this was matched by youthful silhouettes pairing with renaissance-based artwork.

Sharp tailoring also took precedence during the showcase, boasting wide, peaked lapels and masterful layering. Clashing textures and patterns are expressed through padded oversized jackets and mini dresses in geometric fabrics and metallic coverings are made statement through semi-detached, manly shoulder pads.

Ghesquière also explored the concept of androgyny within this collection, depicted on gender neutral models including Jessica Epinosa and 'Krow' who is transgender.

Ghesquière’s exploration of LV’s futuristic fashion was sleek, smart but most importantly gloriously juxtaposed by the historical surroundings housing this vision.
